Discover how to easily use senior passes for all the latest concerts, local events, and museums.
Retirement means more time for adventures and a chance to engage the world in new ways. Many communities have museums and host concerts or local events. Attending nearby festivals and public events allows you to do this without leaving your comfortable bed.
But did you know there are discounted tickets for all sorts of activities just up for grabs?
How to find discounted tickets
- Check venue websites. You can typically find lists of current discounts and promotions online through official websites. Many museums, concert halls, and organizers promote senior pricing and special days with reduced admission pricing.
- Membership programs. If you plan to attend events regularly, you may want to consider museum membership or concert packages. Many organizers offer big savings over buying single tickets.
- 'Museums for All'.The Institute of Museum and Library Services offers an initiative that provides people who receive government assistance access to some museums at a huge discounted price. Sometimes, the cost of admission is as low as a few dollars per person.
- Community organizations. Local art councils and community centers may offer discounted tickets to regional events.
- AAA membership. Members get exclusive discounts on exciting events, including museum tickets, concerts, and nearby attractions.
- Bank card extras. Some banks and credit card companies offer 'Museums on Us,' which allows cardholders free admission to specific museums on the first Sunday of every month.
- National parks. The US National Park Service offers lifetime passes for those 62 and older.
- Senior passes. Dedicated senior passes are a perk at many museums and attractions. You'll need to check eligibility requirements and how to get the pass.
How to use senior passes
- Apply for senior passes. Some venues allow you to apply for discounts online, while others require in-person requests.
- Verify eligibility. Check the venue's website or call to double-check the age and citizenship requirements.
- Provide proper identification. Most venues you visit will require you to present verification of age and sometimes citizenship. Be prepared to provide government-issued identification with your birth date.
- Check for senior days. A lot of places offer senior days with additional discounts and special programs.
- Ask about tickets for friends and family. At certain venues, seniors can sometimes buy discounted tickets for companions.
Things to keep in mind when finding discounts on events
- Check for blackout dates. It's common for specific dates and times to be excluded from discounted ticket promotions.
- Book in advance. Always buy discounted tickets as early as possible, especially for popular events during peak tourist season.
- Consider getting tickets online. Online tickets often come with additional discounts and access to special deals.
- Know what senior passes cover. Sometimes, venues, parks, and events have fees in addition to what the discounted pass covers.
- Parking access. Vehicle hassle is one of the biggest hassles when attending events. Check and see if the venue offers special parking for senior citizens.
- Be flexible. Retirement allows us to visit museums and attend events on less busy days at a heavily discounted price.
