Community Classes and Clubs for Less

Take advantage of the many free and inexpensive classes and clubs in your area to keep your mind and body engaged.

Community Classes and Clubs for Less

Research has shown that two of the best ways to improve your physical and mental well-being are by socializing with others and engaging in continuous learning. These activities have also been shown to reduce your risk of developing dementia. Fortunately, you don't have to spend a lot of money to reap these benefits. There are numerous inexpensive or free classes and clubs available, including ones that are geared specifically towards seniors. To help you find affordable options in your area, check out the following tips:

Recreation Centers

Recreation centers offer a wide array of classes, including ones for fitness and the arts. Most also have programs tailored to the physical needs of older adults, such as chair yoga. Depending on the facility, you may have to pay a monthly membership fee and/or a per-class charge that is typically low or free. But even with a membership fee, these recreation centers tend to be an excellent value for your dollar, since most also include access to a fitness center, swimming pools, and other amenities.

Meet-up Groups

Meet-up is a social media platform where you can find a slew of groups, clubs, and activities in your area. Because a group can be created by any Meet-up member, you're likely to find one that appeals to you. For example, there are many Meet-ups for traditional activities, including hiking, pickleball, and book clubs, but then there are also very specific and unique groups, such as ones for preppers and self-proclaimed geeks.

Our Story

Senior Centers

Not surprisingly, one of the best places to find inexpensive and free classes and clubs geared towards older adults is a senior center. In addition to offering traditional fitness and craft classes, most centers also strive to keep their members informed on subjects such as financial literacy and the latest technologies. Just a heads-up if you're planning on doing an online search for a center near you: A growing number of facilities have decided to remove "senior" from their names because of a perceived stigma attached to that word for some people.

Colleges

Some colleges offer tuition-free courses for senior citizens. Restrictions and conditions vary from college to college, but in most cases, you will only have to pay for such things as books and supplies. Tuition-paying students do take priority, so these free classes are usually on a space-available basis.

Numerous well-known colleges -- such as Stanford, Harvard, and the University of California, Irvine -- also offer free online courses that are geared toward lifelong learners.

Libraries

If you haven't paid a visit to your local library recently, you may be in for a surprise. Libraries have evolved from staid book repositories into vibrant community centers that offer a wide range of classes and events -- everything from traditional book clubs to courses on technology and financial literacy. Many also host special workshops on various topics and offer arts and crafts classes.

Arts and Cultural Centers

Perhaps you've visited your local arts and cultural centers to enjoy a play or check out an exhibit by a favorite artist. But did you know that many also offer classes dealing with the different arts? Prices can vary depending on the center, but these classes are often free and/or very reasonably priced.

Local Newspaper

Check the community section of your local newspaper for events and activities being held in your area. These are often hosted by clubs that you may be interested in joining.

You've probably heard of TED Talks. These are short presentations given by well-known presenters and/or experts in their fields that are focused on Technology, Entertainment, and Design. Live TED Talks can cost you thousands of dollars to attend. But the good news is that you can access TED's library and watch interesting videos on a variety of fascinating topics for free on their website.

This online site offers tutorials and seminars on a variety of subjects that are taught by celebrities and industry leaders. As of January 2025, a subscription that gives you access to the site's entire catalog of classes starts as low as $10 a month (billed annually). Never Quit Learning

The famous author Isaac Asimov once said, "You are never too old to learn more than you already know and to become able to do more than you already can." So, go out and take a class or join a club so that you can become more than you already are.
